Ocular Herpes Simplex Virus treatment

Patients who are affected by herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) can develop ocular sores on the eyelid or surface of the cornea, which is the same virus that causes cold sores on the body. While there is no cure for ocular herpes, our eye doctors are equipped with certain treatments like antiviral drugs to protect the eye from becoming inflamed and prevent the infection from worsening into stromal keratitis.

For most patients, treatment can be accomplished through a few days worth of medication. Your eyes’ health will take a few weeks to fully heal.

However, in rare cases that lead to severe corneal damage, partial corneal transplants such as DMEK or DSAEK may be performed to restore the health of your eyes.
