Retinal detachment (ablatio retinae) is a serious condition which can lead to full loss of vision. If the retina is torn by injury, inflammation, or extremely high myopia, it can separate from the tissue to which it only loosely adheres. In this case, the vision cells on the retina are no longer supplied with nourishment and either die off or exhibit restricted function.
This condition often shows itself in the form of a grey veil or dark curtain in front of the eye. Very early warning signals include seeing flashing lights and/or floaters in the eye. The progress of retinal detachment can be prevented by laser treatment in which the damaged or detached retinal cells are “welded” back into place.
