Preserving Your Vision

Vitamins

A healthy, balanced diet provides the fuel you need for your mind and body. Vitamins play an important role in vision. However, it is not quite as simple as eating your carrots! Many other vitamins are crucial to maintain and strengthen your sight.

  • Vitamin A: Vitamin A helps improve your eyesight, particularly the ability to see in twilight conditions. It is also an important building block for the formation of rhodopsin – the visual purple that converts light energy into electric signals. A sufficient amount of vitamin A can also help prevent nyctalopia, or night blindness.

The main sources of vitamin A are carrots, green vegetables, tomatoes, mangos, and apricots. A glass of carrot juice with a drop of vegetable oil provides your daily allowance of vitamin A. The oil is important, since the body can only process vitamin A in combination with fat.

  • Vitamins B1, B2, B12: These vitamins have a positive effect on general eyesight. They are particularly helpful in cases of light sensitivity. Vitamin B1, B2, and B12 are found mainly in meat, beans, nuts, potatoes, yeast, eggs, milk, broccoli, and poultry. One or two glasses of milk a day, for example, provides the B vitamins you need.

  • Vitamins C and E: Vitamin C stimulates blood flow through the eyes. The recommended daily allowance is 100 milligrams, but more will not hurt you. Sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits, tropical fruits, parsley, potatoes, paprika, chives, and green tea. Enjoy fruits and vegetables raw to obtain the most vitamins.

Vitamin E also supports blood flow. It is found in seeds, nuts, and wheat. 100 grams of whole-grain muesli for breakfast and 200 grams of spinach for supper provide your daily allowance.

  • Antioxidants: Pigments from cranberries and blueberries protect eyes from free radicals. They also help improve night vision and the ability of the eyes to adapt to changing light conditions.

Makeup & Tanning Studios

Makeup or tanning studios are not harmful to your eyes as long as you follow the recommendations below:

  • Do not apply too much mascara, as this could lead to irritation.
  • Only apply kohl to the outside of the eyelid. If applied to the inside of the lid, kohl can clog the glands and lead to inflammation.
  • Preservatives contained in cosmetics can produce allergic reactions in some people. If you experience a reaction, change the brand or stop using the cosmetic altogether.
  • Avoid the use of cosmetic eye drops as they can damage the eyes.
  • Always wear special goggles in the tanning studio to protect your eyes from potentially harmful UV radiation.

Vision at Night

It is said that all cats are grey in the dark. Actually, we experience reduced ability to see in the dark. Additionally, the blue portion of light is higher at night than during the day, which may result in slight nocturnal myopia since blue light is refracted more in the eye. In cases of increased glare sensitivity, this can even lead to nyctalopia, or night blindness.

Our doctors will use special instruments to determine whether you suffer from reduced vision capability in the dark. They often recommend lenses with a high-performance anti-reflection coating to keep additional light reflections out of your eyes at night.

Vision & Sports

Good vision is important in sports. Individual sports eyewear can help improve your game. You can only recognize natural hazards, your teammates, or signs – and react to them appropriately – if you are wearing spectacles with prescription lenses. Suitable eyewear also helps protect eyes from injury from foreign bodies, conjunctivitis, and UV radiation.

We recommend unbreakable plastic lenses and frames to keep your eyewear as light as possible and to help prevent injury if you fall.

Protection Against Airstream Wind (even when wearing progressive lenses)

Without protection, the human eye can cope with wind speeds up to 10 kph. Higher speeds lead to irritation, cause eyes to water, and reduce eyesight. Sports eyewear with strong curves provides effective protection against wind.

If you wear progressive lenses, you can still wear high-quality sports lenses from Eyeworks. Our high-performance progressive lens lets you profit from the world’s first individual progressive lenses with curved surfaces and an optimized power for near and far.

At the Pool

At correct levels, chlorine in swimming pool water is not harmful to the eyes. Nevertheless, spending too much time in water containing chlorine can irritate the mucous membranes of the eye and result in burning or itching. Suitable swimming goggles protect your eyes and prevent red eyes.

Vision & Computers

Working on computers is tiring – especially for the eyes. Studies show that up to 30% of everyone who works with a computer monitor is either wearing the wrong glasses or should be wearing glasses. Not wearing glasses or wearing glasses with the wrong prescription can quickly result in vision problems or headaches when working with a computer monitor. However, these problems are usually solved with a properly fitted pair of glasses for monitor work.

The Right Glasses

Reading glasses are only suitable for distances in the near area up to 40 centimeters and are not enough for presbyopes. “Computer glasses” meet the unique demands of the workplace. Special lenses, such as the Eyeworks Office that guarantee continuous good vision in the extended near zone are particularly suited to working with a computer monitor.
